Top Driving Violations

Wednesday, May 7, 2008; Posted: 4:33 p.m. (CDT)

KSBI-TV cameras filmed drivers for not even a minute and we found someone breaking the law.  Someone was caught driving right through a red light.

Captain Leonard Judy is with the Norman Police Department.  He says, "I do think there are those who deliberately violate the traffic ordinances and then there are some people who through inattention or by accident find themselves in violation.

When it comes to traffic violations, we asked Norman residents if they knew what topped the list.

Kellie Hosty, a Norman resident, says, "Not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign.

Another Norman resident, Nila Aziz, says, "Not stopping at the red light."

Good answers but they were wrong.

Captain Judy says the Norman Police Department writes the most tickets for speeding.  It takes the number one spot.

Hosty says, "Life is too fast!  Everybody is in a hurry.  I speed."

"I think it's just they're in a hurry and they're not thinking," says Aziz.

Coming in second on the list is a critical piece of paper.  Drivers tend to have no proof of insurance.

Number three on the list is those seat belt violations.

"It is amazing to us," says Judy.  "It never ceases to amaze us how some people just can't get it through their heads that seatbelts save lives."

Next on the traffic violations list is registration.  Police discover many drivers have expired tags.  Rounding out the top five is problems with equipment.  For example, problems with brake lights.

"If people would just pay attention to their driving and make an effort to obey the laws that are put their for their benefit, then we can have a lot less problems," says Judy.

Norman drivers shared with us their advice as well.

Hosty says, "Just try to share the road and be considerate.  A lot of people have kids in the car, so slow down!"

Officers want to remind you if you are caught breaking the law on the roads, there are penalties.
