Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays!
It's the holiday season.. never one to be concerned with being politically correct, I wanted to take this opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Christmas has become a political football.. to some it's a religious holiday commemorating the birth of Christ to others...just a holiday to come together enjoy family and friends and exchange gifts and good wishes.
Christmas is a worldwide holiday. There's not a lot of Christians in China but Christmas trees and Santa Claus are everywhere.
Santa's been around since the 4th century...and by some accounts he came from Turkey!... Since then he's become an international icon called Father Christmas, St. Nick, Kris Kringle, Father Frost and host of other names.
For retailers Christmas is big business... many stores generate 40% of all their business during Christmas.
Christians in North and South America and Europe celebrate Christmas on Dec. 25.. Eastern Christians celebrate on January 6th.
By some accounts Christmas started out as a Catholic celebration...in fact throughout history many protestant groups, including the Puritans here in America banned the celebration of Christmas.. in fact it didn't become fashionable in Boston until the mid 1800's!
Charles Dickens 'Christmas Carol' helped revive the 'spirit of Christmas' as a seasonal celebration....emphasizing family, goodwill and compassion.
The first commercial Christmas card was produced in London in 1843... Jingle Bells is an American creation written in 1857.
So for those of you celebrating the birth of Christ ...Merry Christmas. For those of you who just use this time of year to bring some family and friends together to share good wishes, perhaps a few moments of peace ... and remember and appreciate the sacrifices made by others ... Happy Holidays to you.
And on behalf of all of us here at KSBI...have a very Happy New Year!
