4 Years of College

4 Years of College

My career includes about four years as both a university professor and dean. When I was a kid attending college the general rule was it would take 4 years.Today more and more kids think college should take 5 or 6 years to complete!

WHY?  They take about the same number of classes and hours it took to graduate in the 60’s and 70’s.   College is expensive so getting in and out as quickly as possible, finding a job and becoming an independent adult should be something we want our kids to do.

A recent report showed that six years into it, a third of OU and OSU's students still haven't graduated...and it’s even worse for the regional colleges around the state.
If a third of our students can't finish college in six years their future and the future of our state is worrisome. Higher graduation rates mean our kids will earn more and contribute more to our state and nation.

As dean I heard all the excuses about not being able to work and go to school at the same time, why taking 3 or 4 classes a semester was difficult.Adults work  40-50 hours a week so taking 5 classes for 15 hours a week won't kill our kids.  They’ll still have plenty of time to study and work part time.  I have never heard of a college kid dying of exhaustion!

I hate to sound like an old guy but if baby boomers could get through college in 4 years and work at least part time so can today's kids!

For Common Sense, I'm Vince Orza.
