For the first time in the history of the New Orlens Saints, the franchise played for a championship, and in its first appearance the team won. The Saints played in its first ever Super Bowl and won its first ever Super Bowl Sunday night defeating Indianapolis 31-17.
The Colts jumped out to an early 10-0 lead and it looked as if Peyton Manning and the Colts would roll to its second title under the qb. However, after the hot start, the Saints defense stiffened and allowed the Colts only one more touchdown the rest of the game. The Colts defense was solid early as well allowing only six points in the first half including a goal line stand that pushed away the Saints with no points.
The excitement started in the second half, when the Saints began with an onside kick and recovered to get the ball first in the second half. New Orleans took advantage marching the ball over 60 yards and scoring to take its first lead in the game 13-10. The Colts, as they often do under Manning, answered right back marching down and scoring to regain the lead 17-13.
After a New Orleans field goal and then go ahead touchdown, the game was decided by the defense of the Saints. Manning dropped back to pass looking for Reggie Wayne on a slant route, but the ball was picked off by Tracy Porter who then took it 74 yards for the games final score and the Saints rejoiced 31-17.
Manning finished the game 31 of 45 for 333 yards with a touchdown and interception. Drew Brees was 32 of 39 for 288 yards throwing a pair of touchdowns and not turning the ball over. The Colts outgained the Saints by over 100 yards but in the end found themselves falling 31-17.
