Olympic Men's Basketball
In Beijing Monday the U.S. men's basketball team continued their run with a 106-57 shellacking of Germany. Dwight Howard scored 22 points and LeBron James added 18, 16 in the 1st half, as the Americans improved to 5-0 in Olympic play. Next up for the Redeem Team is Australia, they'll face-off Wednesday in quarterfinal action.
Olympic Track and Field
In track and field, Angelo Taylor lead the U.S. men in a sweep of the 400-meter hurdles. Kerron Clement took sliver and Bershawn Jackson earned bronze as The States sweep the event for the first time since the 1960 Rome Olympics.
In other track and field news, Stephanie Brown Trafton won gold in the discus Monday. It was U.S. first medal of any kind in the event since the 1932 games.
Olympic Women's Volleyball
Tuesday morning in Beijing defending champs Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh beat Brazil in straight sets to advance to the finals in beach volleyball. The win was the team's 107th consecutive victory. They will now face top-seeded China in the gold-medal match.
Olympic Women's Gymnastics
The shocker of Monday's events was in women's gymnastics. Nastia Liukin, who won gold in the all-around competition, scores 16.725 on the uneven bars which ties China's He Kexin, and since there cannot be a tie in the Olympics she is awarded the silver medal.
NFL Pre-Season Monday Night Football
In pre-season Monday night football the Giants got three first quarter touchdowns from Domenik Hixson including an 82-yard kickoff return as the defending Super Bowl champs beat Cleveland 37-34. New York's James Butler added this 95-yard fumble return as the Giants ran up a 30 to 17 halftime lead. Brown's starting QB Derek Anderson left the game early in the 2nd with what team officials called a possible concussion. No word yet on his playing status.
Play of the Day
Top 6th, 3-0 Rangers Ordonez with a hit to right field. Marlon Byrd hustles and makes the sliding diving catch. Check that out a couple more times as Byrd somehow manages to keep his eyes on the ball and let his body take the brunt of the dive. Amazing skills and most definitely our play of the day.
