Where are they now? Sean O'Grady

Friday May 2, 2008 11:30 a.m.(CDT)

It all started on the play ground for Sean O'Grady, a simple dream became a reality.

"I was a little boy in a school yard at James Buchannan grade school,18th and Tulsa, right here in Oklahoma City and I looked over to me best friend in the whole wide world and I said, Mark one day I'm gonna be a world champion boxer," said O'Grady. "You know what he did, he laughed at me, told all the kids in the school yard you know the prediction that I made, they all laughed at me and made fun of me, imagine that."

Imagine that indeed. The 'bubble gum bomber' became the lightweight champion of the world in 1981 after the disputed fight of 1980. With that title comes a career with no regrets.

"No I don't have any regrets," said O'Grady. "If I had not been world champion I think I would have had all kinds of regrets."

O'Grady says he's not sure where 'bubble gum bomber' originated, but the name may have helped him out a little bit.

"I got really lucky on it because it just seemed like I wasn't scared, but nobody really knew how scared I was," said O'Grady.

Life now consists of working in the real estate world with his wife Robin. Boxing may be over, but the lessons learned will follow this champ forever.

"I think it defines me," said O'Grady. "We are all an aggregate of everything that's happened in our lives. I think it defines who I am."

The ever so humble Sean O'Grady says the best part of his life now is living here in Oklahoma and still being adored by past boxing fans.

"I am so lucky in my life because I grew up here in Oklahoma and people here in Oklahoma still remember me," said O'Grady. "It's been over 20 years since I've had a boxing match and people still talk to me and still wanna be my friend and I'm so lucky for that. That I grew up here in Oklahoma."
