John Woo to make 'Titanic of the east': report

By AFP

Hong Kong filmmaker John Woo is to follow his box office hits "Red Cliff" and "Red Cliff 2" with a new movie to be shot in China this year, according to the Beijing News.

The president of the country's biggest movie producer and distributor, China Film, told the daily he had reached agreement with the celebrated director, without giving further details.

Woo is best known internationally for directing Hollywood blockbusters "Mission: Impossible II" and "Face/Off."

His new movie has the working title "Pacific Steamer" and tells the story of the sinking of a steam boat en route from mainland China to Taiwan in 1949 as the civil war ends, the paper said, billing it the "Titanic of the east."

Other reports said the agreement with China Film would make up for other investors pulling out of the project.

Woo's last two Chinese projects, "Red Cliff" and "Red Cliff 2", smashed box office records by taking more than 600 million yuan (90 million dollars) in China.
