Man Accused of Killing Wife Goes to Trial

KSBI News

The trial will move forward for a man accused of killing his wife, and lying to police by saying it was a home invasion. Prosecutors say this serious crime is another tragic example of domestic violence.

45-year-old David Hammond will have his day in court for allegedly shooting his own wife, Delola Hammond, last June. David initially told investigators that two Hispanic men broke into their home, and shot his wife while he tried to stop them. Delola, who was shot in the chest, died at OU Medical Center.

Kim Brough, who is with the Domestic Violence Division in the Oklahoma County District Attorney's Office said, "It gets trying for the families and it's very emotional and very difficult for them."

When authorities found two guns in a trash can next to their house, they knew Hammond's story didn't add up. Officers also found a gun holster in his bedroom, which Hammond couldn't explain. Tuesday, the judge decided he will be tried for murder.

"We added an additional count of concealing stolen property for the weapon being stolen," Brough explained.

Hammond initially denied hurting his wife, and said they were getting along well. But the victim's daughter and sister said the couple had a heated argument, and believed David was responsible.

"Domestic violence is a growing problem, it's a serious problem in the community, and it's something that we need to find a way to stop," Brough said.

Hammond will remain in jail since he was denied bond. His next court date is in August.
