School Employee Contracts Meningitis

KSBI News

The Oklahoma State Health Department has confirmed a case of meningitis.

An elementary school employee in Claremore contracted it.

Officials say this strain doesn't pose any additional danger to staff or students.

A health department spokesperson says this form of meningitis is fairly common in the state.

Symptoms include fever, headache, neck stiffness and confusion. Medical attention is still required.

"Germs can be transported from person to person or touching high traffic objects, so it's important to perform good hand hygiene on a regular basis, cover your cough when you cough or sneeze," says Laurence Burnsed with the Oklahoma State Department of Health.

Two Oologah-Talala students died earlier this year after contracting a different, more severe strain of meningitis.
