Rainfall Concerns Lightning Creek Residents

KSBI News

Oklahoma City -- The rainfall that's expected Wednesday and Thursday is causing some concern for residents in one flood-prone area. Some homeowners near Lightning Creek are still recovering from the July floods. They hope Tropical Depression Hermine doesn't bring the same outcome.

Wednesday afternoon, Lightning Creek remained calm, but residents know what can happen.

"You wonder if it's going to happen, if you're going to get out and everything else," says Betty Garza, who is still recovering from the July floods.

You can see some of the damage to Garza's walls and floors. She says the water reached 29 inches inside her home.

"You feel the effects of it for quite a while until it's all over with, but if this weather keeps on, we'll keep on worrying about it for quite a while," says Garza.

Another resident says the retaining wall has fallen into the creek, which could make flooding worse.

"There's big chunks of concrete there that have the water back up to cause the flooding and they were supposed to clean it out," says Sharon Pickle, a Lightning Creek resident.

A memorial stands on the bank for the boy who was washed away and killed in the creek during the last flood. Residents respect the potential dangers, and hope that the creek will remain calm.

"That's all you can do is pray and hope everything goes well for everyone," says Garza.

Residents we talked to say if the rain keeps falling slow and steady, the water should stay within the walls of the creek.
