Oklahoma City -- Another twist has surfaced in the case of a metro pharmacist who shot a would-be robber. A new, amended autopsy upholds the initial report. It says the first shot Jerome Ersland fired at Antwun Parker was not immediately fatal.
It's a high-profile case and the Office of the State Medical Examiner wants to get it right. That's why spokesperson Cherokee Ballard says the interim chief complied with the district attorney's request and issued a supplemental report to Antwun Parker's autopsy.
"We just want to make sure that we have done all we can to assist both sides in this case and we believe, with this review, we have," says Ballard.
Jerome Ersland first shot Parker, the would-be robber, in the head when he tried to rob his southwest Oklahoma City pharmacy. Prosecutors say the pharmacist went too far when he shot Parker five more times.
At issue now is whether that first shot was fatal.
The latest report says: "if the question is would Parker have remained alive for a period of time following the gunshot wound of the head? The answer is almost certainly yes." The report says he would have remained alive because of abundant blood in the body cavities.
"None of the other pathologists said they would change anything, which I think is a point that needs to be made. The cause and manner of death will not change, have not changed and aren't going to," says Ballard.
Notes written by two different pathologists who reviewed the case suggest that the first shot was potentially fatal.
Neither the district attorney or Ersland's attorney wished to comment Tuesday.
A court hearing is scheduled for Thursday.
