Neighborhood Watch Group Takes on Yukon Criminals

KSBI News

After a number of recent break-ins members of Parkland Neighborhood Watch are keeping their eyes peeled for any suspicious activity in their neighborhood.

Ken Smith, who serves as liaison to the Yukon Police Department for Parkland Neighborhood Watch says neighborhood watch programs are vital to reducing crime.

"We have a fantastic police department here in Yukon, but they can't be everywhere at once so it's very important that citizens take a stand for each others security," Smith said.

Smith's neighborhood has been the target for several home and auto thefts in the past few months and was just hit by car-hopper early Tuesday morning. However, the groups' efforts paid off when a member witnessed the theft and called police.

"It's a proven fact that an active neighborhood watch can cut down on crime in the neighborhood," Smith said.

Parkland Neighborhood Watch is one of seven groups instated throughout Yukon. The group first came together 18 months ago after the neighborhood was hit by a number of crimes.

Yukon police say the groups are a vital part of reducing crime in the area because they increase communication and awareness...

"If you come to Yukon with ill intent it's a bad idea," Smith said, "Look somewhere else, because you will get caught here".

The group meets monthly to discuss recent happening. They plan on meeting Thursday night at six at one of members' homes.
