Suspects Arrested in 2 County Crime Spree

KSBI News

Authorities have arrested 2 men who were involved with a crime spree across Seminole and Pottawatomie counties.  In all, 5 armed robberies occurred, 4 vehicles were stolen, and 2 people were injured.  The town of Tecumseh was put on lockdown for most of the day as police searched for one of the men, and many residents feared for their lives.

Around 9:30 this morning, two men car jacked Ruben Brewer outside the Oklahoma Family Medical Center in Konawa.  Brewer fought back while another man, Jimmy Cunningham, tried to help.  Cunningham was shot and critically wounded in the incident.  He was taken to OU Medical Center.  Brewer was beaten in the incident and was taken to an Ada hospital with head injuries.  The suspects turned out to be Bobby Cardenas and Jason Demaggio.

The men got away in Brewer's truck and drove about 1 mile to Maud, where they stole an OG&E contractor's vehicle.  The suspects then robbed the Quick Stop in Maud, and demanded that a customer give them their keys.  In another stolen vehicle, they went to the Trinity Baptist Church in Maud and robbed 2 women stealing another vehicle.

After 10am, Troopers then saw the suspects on their way to Tecumseh, where they ran a patrol car off of the road.  Authorities then fired at the suspects, knocking out the van's back window.  Police say Cardenas and Demaggio tried to rob a Ralph's Pharmacy at 211 N. Broadway.  The pharmacy owner and suspects exchanged fire inside the store.  Demaggio then fled on foot, while Cardenas jumped back in the van and stole another vehicle in Tecumseh.

George Thomas was about to take his son to the doctor when Cardenas carjacked him.

"By the time I looked around a guy had a gun in my face," Thomas explained.  "I'm just very thankful that we're ok and they apprehended the guy."

"I was pretty scared when I saw the gun pointed at my dad and I was thinking please don't shoot my dad," said Christian Thomas, George's 13-year-old son.

Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Deputies then caught up with Cardenas on Highway 9 west of Tecumseh.  A chase ensued and speeds reached 100 miles per hour.  Authorities put down spike strips to stop Cardenas.  They were able to take him into custody near 98th on Highway 9 in Cleveland County.

Captain J.T. Palmer with the Pottawatomie Co. Sheriff's Department said, "We did recover some narcotics out of the vehicle we chased in Norman."

Authorities arrested Jason Demaggio after 3pm today.  About 10 different agencies helped look for the suspect by utilizing an airplane search, K-9 units, and setting up checkpoints at every exit out of Tecumseh.  Sheriff's said the search was a long process throughout the day.

"It just makes it more complicated because we're already in town and we do have more houses to search," Captain Palmer described.

George says that he will make sure his door is locked at all times, and hopes these suspects will end up in a prison where they can't hurt anyone else for many years.

"There are consequences for your actions and those were terrible actions." Thomas added.

OSBI is investigating the shooting and assault and battery in Konawa, 4 carjackings, and the convenience store robbery.  Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Department is overseeing the other investigations.
