Cyril, Okla. -- Students at a southwest Oklahoma school have an early fall break of sorts. High winds blew the roof right off Cyril High School Tuesday afternoon, forcing officials to cancel classes while clean-up begins.
Within a matter of seconds, mother nature reminded officials at Cyril High School what she's capable of doing.
"You just never expect that one gust of wind that lasts a few seconds to cause this much damage," says Jamie Mitchell, Superintendent of Cyril Public Schools.
Mitchell says the heavy gust of wind that blew the roof clean off the building lasted only about six seconds. Thursday, trash bags and roofers were the topics of discussion instead of more traditional high school subjects. Mitchell says classes are canceled while crews toss out what's been ruined.
A large dehumidifier has been set up to pull moisture out of the building. Most of the high school received rain damage after the roof blew off.
Even after all the damage, officials were reminded that mother nature can also be sensitive. Mitchell says the incident happened at 3:10 p.m. on Tuesday, just five minutes before the final bell.
"If it would've happened a few minutes later we would've had kids outside. It's very possible that someone would've been back here where our roof landed," says Mitchell.
Fortunately, no one was hurt.
Mitchell says they don't have an estimated cost of damage yet, but he says it's extensive.
Classes will resume on Tuesday.
