Double Hand Transplant Patient Recovering Fast

KSBI News

A man from Edmond became the third person in the nation to receive a double hand transplant.

On Tuesday, Richard Edwards showed off his new hands and talked about the successful operation that took place in Louisville, Ky. During the 17-plus hour surgery, doctors were able to connect nerves and tendons on his original hands.

In 2006 the chiropractor's truck caught fire and he suffered burns to 30 percent of his body. Now he is able to make a full fist with his left hand and move part of his right.

"I'm so thankful I have a team of doctors that were allowed to think outside the box and take a chance like that. I don't know what else to say except thank you," said Edwards.

Edwards will remain in Louisville for a few months to complete the therapy.
