Oklahoma City children joined more than 2 million kids nationwide in a project that highlights the importance of early childhood education.
As part of the Read for the Record campaign, kids across the country read the same book on the same day. On Thursday, Lt. Gov. Jari Askins read to a group of 40 children at the Educare facility downtown.
She said one of every three children in kindergarten in the country is unprepared to succeed at a graduate level, and that reading to a child one-on-one is important.
"So that all the attention can be focused on that one child is essential in helping that child develop the esteem and confidence that they cannot just become a reader, but a lifelong learner," said Askins.
About 80 students at the school received free books.
