The Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson says he wants to intervene in the case between Larry Jones, Feed The Children's president, and the organization. Edmondson says his duty is to protect the public's interest.
"It is critically important that someone come in and restore the public's confidence," he said.
Alleged misuse of property and money surround Feed the Children, while founder Larry Jones is accused of inappropriate actions. Jones' lawyer, Mark Hammons, says Edmondson has the power to oversee the actions of charitable institutions and correct the problems.
"Mr. Edmondson can provide an invaluable service to not just the charity and the people in governance, but to all the people who benefit from the charity," Hammons said.
In a statement, Feed the Children said the A.G. is a necessary part in these proceedings and they welcome his participation. They also said books and records will be made available to help expedite the A.G.'s inquiries.
"The facts are pretty clear about where the problem in Feed the Children lies, and it's not with Mr. Jones," Hammons said. "I think Drew Edmondon's role in this is essential to saving that charity."
Larry Jones has been asking for financial information from Feed the Children, which he says the board has refused. That is until a court order was granted.
