Thursday morning officers say they got a call from a resident saying her car had been stolen from her driveway. A few minutes later police found a man driving that stolen car at S.W. 89th and Kentucky.
"The vehicle accelerated at a high rate of speed, ultimately went through a yard and a fence. As the driver attempted to drive back northbound seeing that this is not a through street, the driver lost control of the vehicle," said Capt. Patrick Stewart, Oklahoma City Police Department.
The car finally stopped when it hit a curb. At that time two officers approached the car with their guns drawn, shouting verbal commands.
"This driver failed to comply with the verbal commands, put the vehicle in reverse and violently spun that vehicle around in a 180. During this incident both officers discharged their duty weapons," said Stewart.
That man was struck and pronounced dead at the scene. Captain Stewart says it's not uncommon for a vehicle to be used as a deadly weapon, but ultimately the district attorney will decide if this shooting was justified.
Both officers have been placed on administrative leave with pay, pending the investigation.
