OK Co. Catholic Church Closing

KSBI News

The Catholic church in Nicoma Park will be closing soon.  The Archbishop of Oklahoma City made the decision this week.  Worshippers at the Oklahoma County church are devastated by the news.  The more than 100 families here at Our Lady of Fatima will have to worship somewhere else soon.  The Oklahoma City Archdiocese says they will shut the doors because of a priest shortage.  The parish started more than 50 years ago, and will celebrate it's last mass in June.

Helen Opat, a parishioner at Our Lade of Fatima said, "It's been our church, this is our home, but it's not going to be anymore I guess."

Opat says it's been difficult for many in the congregation.

"It has meant everything to me, I put my heart an soul in this church," Opat described. "I feel terrible, I don't know what I'm going to do."

Archbishop Eusebius Beltran wrote in a letter that there's not just a shortage of priests.  The church needs expensive repairs, and a new rectory.  Plus the diocese population is growing in the metro.  He adds that merging small, neighboring parishes can be a richer experience.  Helen just hoped it would be at Our Lady of Fatima.

"I don't know what I'll do, I just don't know because there's not going to be too many years left where I'll be able to drive," Opat explained.

In 2008, the diocese closed 3 rural churches.  Our Lady of Fatima will celebrate their last mass June 6th.
