A registered sex offender has been arrested for killing a Spencer woman. It happened over the weekend in Midwest City. Investigators say the suspect met the victim and killed her within a matter of minutes.
Midwest City Police Chief Brandon Clabes said, "She didn't feel like she was in harms way, unfortunately she was."
26-year-old Nelly Pelts worshiped and served at Christ Gospel Church in Midwest City.
"It wasn't unlikely for her to witness to people about her christian faith," Chief Clabes explained.
Just after midnight Saturday morning, registered sex offender James O'Berry struck up a conversation with Pelts at Walmart, and lured her to the church parking lot. O'Berry, who's a convicted rapist, stabbed Pelts numerous times and then ran her over just 15 minutes after they met.
"He picked a prey who was unfortunately vulnerable to him," Chief Clabes described. "We don't know why he killed her, other than he may have been trying to sexually attack her and she refused."
O'Berry told investigators that he remembered meeting the girl, then blacked out, and woke up at his mobile home with blood on his clothes. But after the incident he cut his hair and threw the clothes in a dumpster.
"We think he knew what he was doing," Chief Clabes added.
Tonight, KSBI Thunder TV News talked to O'Berry and he said, "I don't know what happened, I blacked out, and I don't remember a thing, I swear to God."
O'Berry will be charged with 1st Degree Murder, and has a long violent criminal history in Alabama.
