"It's her choice. I would think probably because of my past comments I will always have an opponent that is diametrically opposed to what I stand for," said Rep. Sally Kern, (R) District 84.
Rep. Sally Kern thinks Brittany Novotny has chosen to run against her because Kern is known for her anti-gay comments. And Novotny says she's right.
"The way that plays into it, I feel like she's been in the legislature focusing on issues like that that aren't really facing Oklahoma voters right now," said Brittany Novotny, District 84 Candidate.
Kern made national headlines when she wrote a proclamation blaming the nation's economic problems on the fact that Americans have accepted same sex marriage. She says she's not placing blame, she's just stating her opinion.
"I'm not blaming anything on homosexuals or anyone else, if I'm going to blame anybody and when I go talk I say this, It's the fault of Christians for not standing up to what they believe," said Novotny.
But Novotny says Kern's way of thinking is out of touch with voters. She says Kern has been in the legislature for five years and has nothing to show for it.
"She's had five years to address these issues and I don't think they've been addressed well enough. We still have the lowest average teacher pay in the region," said Novotny.
Kern disagrees and says she knows what her constituents want. And she says the district's not ready for Novotny.
"I don't think so, we are a very conservative state and we will probably remain that way for some time," said Kern.
Notvotny says she doesn't want this election to be about her personal decision to become a woman, instead she wants voters to see what she could do for District 84.
"This race is not about me, it's about District 84 and making sure that they're concerns are met and I believe they'll judge me by my character and my ability to fight for them," said Novotny.
