"Trooper Martin will serve a five day suspension without pay," said Captain Chris West, Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
In a news conference, OHP announces Trooper Daniel Martin's punishment after the video of Martin and paramedic Maurice White was posted for all to see. In the video, Trooper Martin attempted to pull over and arrest White, for refusing to pull over, even though White has a patient on board his ambulance. The altercation did take a violent turn. This scuffle sparked national attention and caused OHP to conduct an internal investigation. Captain West says investigators found that Trooper Martin did have probable cause to pull over and arrest White for failure to yield to a police officer. But they say his actions in doing so were unprofessional and inappropriate.
"The situation could have and should have been handled differently," said Captain West.
Richard O' Carroll, who is Maurice White's attorney is outraged by this punishment. He says the entire OHP investigation was slanted in favor of Trooper Martin and the fact that Martin choked White was never considered.
"The trooper was out of control. he pulled over an ambulance because he had hurt feelings. This man shouldn't have a gun. He stops people, yells at people and curses people," said O' Carroll.
O' Carroll says that the video proves his client was wrongfully assaulted by Trooper Martin and it's through this video he thinks justice will finally be served.
"Since the system won't work, we'll do what lawyers have been doing since the beginning of time. We'll ask that jury speak to these circumstances and let a jury look at this video," said O' Carroll.
