Whether they are catching speeders, helping out stranded motorists or working a crash scene OHP troopers say if you're breaking the law this weekend in Oklahoma County you will get caught.
"We're trying to protect them from themselves, that's what's expected of us and that's what we do, and we don't make any apologies for it," said Trooper David Hellums, Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
Last year six people were killed on Oklahoma roads over the 4th of July weekend, so this year troopers are stepping up their enforcement.
"If we can get them to wear their seat belts and slow down probably half the fatalities wouldn't happen," said Hellums.
Trooper Hellums and many others will be patrolling the streets and using this gun to get you to slow down. After giving it a try, we went after some of those speeders. A motorcyclist weaved through traffic on I-35 going 85 miles an hour and got sent home with a 200 dollar ticket. Hellums says the troopers work as hard as they can to keep their streets safe, but at the end of the day they know it may not be enough.
"When you're working a county as big as Oklahoma County as many people it has and your working 4-5 trooper covering the whole county it's difficult, we do the best they can," said Hellums.
