Community Efforts Keep Fireworks Show on Schedule

KSBI News

"The city right now, as well as other cities throughout the country are experiencing a financial downfall right now.  So, it was one of those things they saw they could cut out of the budget," said Kraig Edelman, Purcell Fire Department.

Among the numerous budget cuts made in Purcell was the city's annual fireworks show.  However, the community came together to keep the tradition alive.

What normally would take six to eight months to prepare for, the city accomplished in only a few weeks.  Even going door to door to raise money for the fireworks show.

"At one point, it was getting kind of skeptical to see if we were going to raise enough money, but it was just knocking on doors and asking the right people," said Edelman

Local fireworks stands in Purcell are not getting the sales they hoped for.  They, too are seeing cuts, but for them it's in the number of customers actually making purchases

"The people that do show up, they just pick out what little bit of stuff that they can.  There's been nothing big really we've been selling," said Curtis Bryan, owner of Veterans Fireworks.

Bryan understands the financial shortfalls many are faced with today.  He's out $7,000 since opening his fireworks tents last month.

With Bryan's shortfall comes a little hope, and a community's effort turned out to be an Independence Day success.

"One stand that absolutely wasn't doing any good has actually started selling today.  So that's a good sign," added Bryan.

"Tomorrow, it should be a great day.  Not only is it Independence Day, but like I said, it's a community project.  So everybody's coming together," said Edelman.

Even with such last minute money preparations for the holiday event, city leaders say that residents should still expect a fireworks show that's just as good, if not better than, previous years.
