Walk of Fame and Future Plans at Bricktown Canal's 10th Anniversary

KSBI News

City and Bricktown leaders gathered Thursday morning to honor Bricktown's first mayor and Bricktown's creator.  After a decade of the canal's success, city leaders say we should see more developments to come.

"The beauty of the canal, I think has enhanced today from where it was 10 years ago, and you can only imagine on how it's going to increase in the future," said Mayor Mick Cornett of Oklahoma City.

On the Bricktown canal's 10th anniversary, Bricktown's first mayor, Jim Brewer, and its creator, Neal Horton were declared inaugural inductees on the Brictown Walk of Fame.

Bricktown Association Executive Director, Jim Cowan said that downtown has grown significantly over the past decade and that there are plans to make it even bigger.

"We think that there's an opportunity with the canal to possibly go to a convention center or further connect to the river so that when people come downtown, it's easy for them to walk around, go to events, go to the Ford Center, and there's not a better place to walk than the canal," said Cowan.

Plans include extending the canal north and west.

Cowan said that no matter what happens over another ten years, we'll definitely see Bricktown stay connected to surrounding developments.

"Even on just a summer night with nothing at all going on, it's bustling with people that are getting out to enjoy Bricktown," said Cowan.

$20 million was spend to build the canal in 1999.  Bricktown's currently seeing nearly $110 million from private developments that are still growing.
