Vietnam Wall Set Up, Opens Tomorrow

KSBI News

Vietnam war veterans say they're getting the homecoming now, they never got.

"I can walk up to another veteran, and you'll see tears in his eyes," said Bill Elkins, Post Commander. "We didn't get a good welcome when we came home."

The Vietnam War Memorial replica travels across the country, giving people the opportunity to pay respects without travelling to Washington, D.C.

Jeremy Sparks is part of the group that is managing the trip to Oklahoma. He says that this is more than a job--- it's a responsibility.

"To have that time for them to reflect, to remember," Sparks said, "It's just a tremendous honor to be able to do that for them."

And for the veterans who have come to visit the wall, they say they feel the pride, the patriotism, and the power of a tribute that moves, in more ways than one.

"There hasn't been too many days gone by since I got back from over there that I haven't been thankful to the good Lord that my name isn't on this wall," said Vietnam War Veteran Richard Shank. "And this is by the grace of God that I made it back and I'm thankful for that."

"We got treated extremely rough," Memorial truck driver Wayne Jones said. "It's been a long time coming."
