Ceiling Collapses on Del City Family

KSBI News

Del City-- High winds from last night's storms caused ceilings to fall through apartment rooms, landing on several Del City residents inside, including a little baby.

Rain-soaked insulation and sheet rock collapsed on top of three residents inside one room at Trinity Place Apartments.

"Oh, God, it scared me.  It scared me to death.  The whole living room fell in," said Vicky Brand, apartment resident.

Vicky Brand was in the kitchen when the ceiling collapsed on her two daughters and five-month-old granddaughter.

"My granddaughter was laying on the floor.  She's only five-months-old, and it's just all over her.  It scared us all," said Brand.

"At that point in time, I thought I had killed a little baby," said William Hill, President of Nexterior Incorporated.

William Hill is a roofing contractor.  His crew was in the middle of applying new shingles at the apartment buildings.

"It wasn't the roofer's fault.  I know he was scared to death yesterday, but it wasn't his fault," added Brand.

High winds whirling through the area blew away tarps that were buttoned down to prevent rain and hail from getting inside.

"The wind almost blew me off the roof twice, holding the tarps.  The hail started falling and with 75-mile-per-hour winds, that's quite painful," said Hill.

Although it's been quite painful, the good news is, no one was hurt, including Vicky's grandchild.

"They rinsed out her eyes.  She was a little dusty and doing very well right now," said Hill.

Crews plan to complete the roof Wednesday.

The Del City Fire Department said that at least eleven apartment units had water damage.  Displaced residents have been moved temporarily to local motels with help from The Red Cross.
