10th Annual Endeavor Games

KSBI News

"The people you meet at the Endeavor Games is what makes it fantastic.  The athletes have great stories.  They have great personalities and they face adversity in a way that you'd never approach it as an able-bodied person," said Ryan Wilson, University of Central Oklahoma Marketing and Public Relations.

The University of Central Oklahoma hosts the nationally-recognized, 10th annual Endeavor Games for athletes with physical disabilities.  The numerous different sports give disabled athletes, from all over the world, the chance to learn or develop their skills.

"People will go, 'Aw, I'm so sorry you're in a wheelchair,' and I say, no, you should be watching what I can do in this wheelchair because we do it.  We do it with style and probably better than any able body can do it," said Orlando Perez, wheelchair basketball athlete.

Orlando Perez is from Puerto Rico, but resides in Georgia.  He was in the U.S. Army and got injured during training, which caused a tumor in his spinal cord.  Perez said that life goes on for him.

"Not stopping.  Once you reach an accomplishment like overcoming your disability and taking into life into a higher level, you can't go back.  You've just got to go forrward and see what else you can do," Perez said.

Wilson added, "Last year, we had 23 members of the military come out and this year, we have over 70."

This year's endeavor games introduces two new sports to the competitions: cycling and sitting volleyball.  With the highest attendance expected at this year's endeavor games, UCO hopes its athletes will compete worldwide.

"Hopefully, the dream is we get the younger athletes out here, cultivate the paralympic sport, and hopefully they can go out to the paralympic games and compete internationally," said Wilson.
