Thousands Watch the New Building Take Shape

KSBI News

The walls of KSBI-TV's new building are going up as we speak.  Tens of thousands of motorists are able to watch the progress everyday just by taking a drive down the Kilpatrick Turnpike.  It's one of the reason's that our new facility is going up in that area of Northwest Oklahoma City.  The high winds have forced the crews to move from the north side of the building to the south side today.  That gives them a chance to sheet parts of the building that need more attention than others.  Window wells line the south wall of the new KSBI.  In the next few days, it'll be the only way to see inside the building.

Foreman Lance Pellegrini said, "We're prepping these windows over here, cutting the itch, drilling these sheets, just getting ready to sheet this wall right here."

Whether they know it or not, motorists who take the Kilpatrick Turnpike can catch a glimpse of history in the making everyday at the metro's only television station on a main thoroughfare.

Jacque Damrill, the Public Information Officer with the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority said, "We actually have over 100,000 cars a day travel the Kilpatrick Turnpike."

Jacque Damrill of the OTA says the Kilpatrick has quickly become one of the most heavily traveled turnpikes in the state.

"The majority of our traffic is local, it's people going to and from work," Damrill explained. "In the area where the TV station is going to be we have about 18,000 people who travel that area on a daily basis.  That's 9,000 both directions so that's a significant amount of people who travel that road everyday."

Developing a faster way to bring local news to the community one bolt, and car at a time.

"The majority of businesses along the Kilpatrick will tell you the growth in Northwest Oklahoma City is due to the turnpike, it allowed easier access to these businesses," Damrill concluded.

If all goes well for the rest of the week and there is no bad weather, crews should be able to completely sheet around the outside of the building so they can put on the roof, starting next week.  In the next couple of years, officials will be looking to expand the Kilpatrick Turnpike to 6 lanes, which will help congestion.  As for the new building, crews also started to work on the gutters.  Don't forget you can watch the progress live from our newest StateCam.
