Canadian Co. Sheriffs Get New Drug Dogs

The Canadian County Sheriff's Department is increasing its presence in the metro by adding a few good men.  But it's not who you might expect.  Two canines will help catch people bringing drugs into the county.  A few years back, three canine units worked hard patrolling the area and finding millions of dollars in contraband.  So new Sheriff Elect Randy Edwards, promised to bring it back.  And with a little help, he was able to do that even before he took office.

Angel Soriano, the owner of K-9 University in Oklahoma City said, "He's quite the dog, he's a handful."

Asta, a 13-month-old German Shepard is the newest addition to the Canadian County Sheriff's Department, which was donated by K-9 University.

"It's the right dog for the job, he's a suited dog, so we talked to sheriff Randall at length as to whether or not he could have a home with the sheriff's department," Soriano explained.

He and this Cocker Spaniel named Max, short for Maximum Sentence, will make it possible once again for county sheriff's to use probable cause and search cars for drugs.

Randall Edwards, the new Canadian County Sheriff Elect said, "These dogs will responsible for the arrest, apprehension, and seizure of those who bring drugs into Canadian County."

The Okie Dokie Cocker Spaniel Rescue was able to rehabilitate max to hit the streets once again.

"We're going to be able to get right into our K-9 program, we're going start our drug intervention program on I-40," Edwards described.

Right now, the dogs are going through protection training and drug scenting.

"Its quite intense he's a duel purpose dog," Soriano added. "It's kind of exciting to know that Asta will be in the newspaper someday arresting some would-be drug abuser."

And in a few months the pair will be ready to fight crime, once Sheriff Edwards takes office.

"Without these donations of these two dogs we wouldn't be able to hit the ground running come January," Edwards concluded.

This is just the start for the K-9 unit in Canadian County.  They look to add other dogs once they get Max and Asta out in the field.  Randall Edwards will officially become the new Sheriff of Canadian County in January.
