Microchips Help Ensure Safe Return

Friday, August 1, 2008; Posted: 5:15 p.m. (CDT)

Norman, Okla. -- Dozens of cats and dogs now have a much better chance of going home in case they're ever lost.

Pet owners and pets alike lined up Friday at the Norman Animal Welfare Center to get microchips.

The chip is inserted just under the skin.  Program officials can find the owner's information through scanning the barcode in the microchip if the pet runs off and is found by a stranger.

Clint Denney, Norman Animal Welfare Supervisor says you can also find the owners another way.

"If your pet gets lost and you have all the tags on it, you don't even need a scanner to relocate it.  There's a little yellow sticker that also gives the chip number on it with an 800 number.  They can call the 800 number and give them that chip number and it will tell the owner also," explains Denney.

Officials plan to host a microchip clinic again.  The cost is $20 for Norman residents.
