Fatal Shooting at Club Rodeo

KSBI News

A confrontation transitioned into a fatal shooting at Club Rodeo in southwest Oklahoma City around 2 a.m. Thursday morning.

As security sent people out the doors and into the club’s parking lot, one man got a gun and opened fire on security.

Four of Club Rodeo’s part-time security guards on duty at the time are armed off duty University of Oklahoma Police Officers. The guards shot several rounds at the suspects, killing one man and injuring two others.

Oklahoma City Police Sergeant Jennifer Wardlow says the investigation is still pending, but that only of the men fired a gun at the security guards.

“From our investigation to this point we believe that this suspect was actually firing in the direction of the officers and that's why they returned fire,” Wardlow said.

The deceased man has been identified as 24-year-old Lance Dawkins of Edmond. Dawkins is believed to have been un-armed but with the suspect at the time of the altercation and shooting. Dawkins was pronounced dead at the scene.

The shooter has been identified as 23-year-old Johnny Mixon of Midwest City. Mixon is in critical condition at Presbyterian Hospital. If he recovers and is released he could face a number of charges including assault with a deadly weapon.

The third suspect in the case is 24-year-old Bryan Bonner of The Village. Bonner received only minor injuries and has been released from the hospital. Police interviewed him earlier today. At this time he is not facing charges.

“We know that there were several people outside at the time this happened,” Wardlow said, “It’s two o’clock in the morning and the club is letting out. There were lots of people there but after the shooting occurred most of those people left before officers could talk to them...It was just an unfortunate incident”.

A Club Rodeo worker declined to comment on this report.

Police are asking you to call their Homicide Tipline if you or anyone you know has information about this fatal shooting. They can be reached at 297-1200.
