Man Killed in Crane Accident Identified

KSBI News

A man is killed and another injured in a crane accident outside of Chesapeake Energy.  Today, authorities release the name of the man who died, while putting away equipment at the time of the incident.

At about 8:30pm Tuesday night, construction crews on the Chesapeake Energy campus near NW 63rd St. and Classen Blvd. were finishing up after replacing roofing shingles on a 4-5 story building.  A few workers were trying to dismantle a crane when something went terribly wrong.

Deputy Chief Cecil Clay with the Oklahoma City Fire Department said, "A piece of crane or a load that was on the crane had dropped and struck the individual."

42-year-old Michael Parsons of El Reno was pronounced dead at the scene, while another man was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  The occupational safety and health administration has opened an investigation.

"There's a lot of parts that are put together that weigh quite a bit, and depending on the height of the structure they're working on the fall hazards are there too," Clay explained.

The crane belonged to Oklahoma City based Rent-A-Crane, who's spokesperson declined to comment today.  OSHA will now have 6 months to figure out if there was any misconduct.

"It was a very tragic incident," Clay described.

The roof was being replaced because it was damaged during a massive hail storm in May.  Chesapeake extended their deepest sympathies to family and friends of the victim.
