How Old is "Too Old" to Drive?

Tuesday, July 11, 2006; Posted: 11:20 am(CDT)

How old is "too old" to be behind the wheel? It's a question that is being raised again, following an accident this past weekend in Connecticut. An 85-year old driver lost control of his car and plowed into a crowd of people at a festival. Twenty-seven people were injured, two seriously.

The crash has cast yet another spotlight on elderly drivers. However, some elderly drivers say you shouldn't put them all in the same category.

If you drive around with Morty Morrison, it's like taking a trip back in time. He was born on the day the Titanic sank, and has lived through the stock market crash and two World Wars.

Morty says he's 94, but he feels like he's going on 60.

So when he went to renew his driver's license this year he was surprised he was not given any exams to test his ability to continue driving.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, only two states, Illinois and New Hampshire, require drivers 75 years and older to retake a road test when renewing their licenses.

Morty says more states should give the tests. He teaches a course to the elderly on the best ways to avoid accidents and when seniors should stop driving.

Morty says, "We are not as nimble, nor do we have the strength. Some people can't handle a wheel in an emergency."

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that older drivers also have higher rates of fatal crashes based on miles driven than any other group, except very young drivers.

Morty says it's important to be aware of your limitations as an older driver.

He says you should not put all senior drivers in the same group, because it's not a fair assessment of their abilities.

He says if you look at any group of drivers you are likely to find problems.
