Hitting the Road this Summer?

Friday, June 9, 2006; Posted 1:44 p.m. (CDT)

Tens of millions of Americans will go on vacation this summer.  Whether they travel by cars or plane, there are some things they'll need to know to stay healthy.

Dr. Ricardo Martinez of The Schumacher Groups says, "You want to prepare for the worst by having a first aid kit, water and an
emergency kit."

Some travelers admit they don't have the basic health supplies in their car.

"We have the things we use on a day-to-day basis, the wipes, the extra diapers, but as far as things in an emergency situation like that that we should have, we don't, but I will now, "says Shannon Kiger.

Dr. Martinez says you don't have to spend a lot of money on a first aid kit, "it's Band-Aids, it's cleaning swabs, it's medication to keep it clean, maybe some iodine."

He also says whether you drive or fly, written medical information might be the most important item you bring on vacation. "A letter from your doctor or even a hand written note with your information on what your medical history is, what medications you're on and any sort of diagnosis we need to know about."

As for medications, it's recommended you keep them in the original container for easier identification.

Never pack any prescription medication in your checked luggage.

If the bag is lost, you might spend a lot of time during your trip trying to replace the pills.
