Four More Alabama Churches Burned

A troubling announcement from the Alabama State Fire Marshal's Office, less than one week after five fires were set at churches in Bibb County, Alabama, four more churches were burned.

These new blazes occured Tuesday across the rural western part of the state.

Two of the churches in Tuesday's fires were destroyed, the other two were only damaged.

Residents across the state say they don't understand how anyone could gain satisfaction out of burning a church.

Authorities say there are similarities among the four blazes: the congregations at the churches torched Tuesday are all black.

Authorities say, like last Friday, arson is suspected, however, they aren't sure if the same person is responsible for all the fires.

They have brought specially trained dogs in to aide the investigation. The dogs have detected substances which may have been used to ignite the fires.

Broken doors at several churches showed the person responsible for the fires must have forced entry into the buildings. And authorities have also found tracks in the mud around the churches.

Authorities say they have no suspects, but they are asking the public to help them look for anyone who may have burns on their hands.

They still aren't sure why Baptist churches are being targeted, it could be a religious bias, anger at the church, or some other unknown reason.

A spokesman from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and firearms says an investigation into whether the fires were racially motivated has been launched.
