The ground around Oklahoma is so saturated that there is literally nowhere else for it to go. So, when storms came through the Shawnee/Tecumseh area earlier today flash flooding became a huge problem.
Melvin Potter, with Tecumseh Emergency Management, says, "We are not under a emergency evacuation at all in the city of
Tecumseh."
What they are under is a lot of water. Rising creeks and flooded streets are making it hard to get around.
Potter says, "Since midnight last night we've gotten over three inches of rain."
When Bob Evans heard about the rising waters his first concern was for his cattle.
Evans says, "I've got cattle in here and it took the fence down on this corner."
Officials say the water rose so quickly they were concerned for some residents.
Potter says, "We evacuated one lady earlier this morning to city hall where we have a shelter set up."
The waters have receded enough that the woman, an Alzheimer's patient, was able to return home.
Residents in the area say they are getting very tired of this rain and these floods.
Evans says, "There's lots of rain, lots of rain. I think Noah was right, he built an ark. I'm ready for it to go away."
FEMA officials saw firsthand how flooding is affecting one Oklahoma city. Officials were in Tecumseh surveying damage from rain that came through in May. Tecumseh officials say they're glad they were here to see the flooding as it's happening.
