Planning Your Wedding: The Perfect Dress

Friday, February 9, 2007; Posted: 1:10 p.m. (CDT)

Oklahoma City -- You will most likely remember the family photos, the flowers and the decorations when you look back on your wedding day.  But perhaps how you looked will stand out most.

Bride-to-be Cecilia Akesson wants to look perfect.

"I've envisioned this since we were kids," says Cecilia.  "I've always seen myself in something really simple."

KSBI-TV headed to Alfred Angelo with Cecilia in search of the perfect dress.

Consultant Ericka Fix says knowing the location, theme and color scheme of your wedding will help them help you.

"When you know the tone of a wedding and you know something they would like, it helps you kind of get them in a direction to assist them into finding something they can fall in love with," explains Fix.

Cecilia said she wanted something simpler without all the frills.  Fix still had her try some more elaborate gowns just in case.

"The wedding dress kind of sets that tone of where you're going with the whole theme of your wedding, so you want to make sure you have exercised every avenue because the worst that could happen is that you don't like it," says Fix.

Cecilia tried on five dresses with different styles and fits.  She's glad she tried different types of dresses because it gave her a better idea of what she liked.

"It's just hard because everything kind of looks the same and you don't really know what to do, but you try them on and that's when you really see what they look like," says Cecilia.

Keep in mind lace and certain silks cost more.  Dresses with more detail also cost more.  You can get on mailing lists or shop around for sales if you're looking to save a few bucks.

Picking one dress can be difficult after trying on multiple dresses.  Fix says think about which gown best matches the venue and the theme.

"Look at each individual dress you think you might like and pull it together in that whole big scheme of things and see which one best fits your wedding, which one makes you feel the best," says Fix.

Cecilia hasn't picked one yet.  She's taking her time and enjoying the once in a lifetime process.

"I really like it, it's exciting.  It's not any pressure, you just go in and look around and decide afterward," says Cecilia.

Fix also says take your time.  The entire process can take quite some time after shipping, alterations and fittings.  Fix recommends giving yourself at least six months.
