A scary situation in Edmond, a woman getting ready for work looked in the mirror and saw a man standing behind her. The man, Scott Thorton, abducted her, took her to a bank and then to Home Depot. Edmond Police say that's where she made her escape.
Glynda Chu, with the Edmond Police Department, says, "She screamed as loud as she could, 'Man with a gun,' and she ran to the back of the store as fast as she could."
As the woman ran away, the suspect ran out of an Edmond Home Depot across the street to a nearby neighborhood. That's where he attempted to break into the Waller's home.
Lyle Waller says, "There's a big muddy footprint on the door."
For some reason the suspect did not go in the Waller's home. Instead he ran to the yard next door.
Bill Aycock lives in that home.
He says, "I was cooking lunch, about ready to leave for class, heard some leaves rustling. I looked out the back window and he was in the brush pile covering himself up with leaves."
When the leaves wouldn't hide him, the suspect broke through another neighbor's door, taking two people hostage.
Edmond Police quickly arrived. Negotiators began working to bring the man and hostages out of the home.
Chu says, "After a couple of hours he did allow the hostages and himself to walk out without incident."
Police were actually able to get help from inside the home where the hostages were being held. The two hostages used text messaging to stay connected with police, letting them know what was happening inside the home.
Chu says, "That was kind of a first for us to be able to use that tool of technology."
The Wallers say even though the suspect ran away from their home, it's still scary to think they could have been the ones taken hostage.
Ursula Waller says, "You always think in the back of your mind that somebody could just break in like this. You don't really think it's going to happen. This is a quiet neighborhood. It's unusual for something like this to happen."
Edmond school officials say schools in the area where locked down as a precaution. The suspect did not try to enter any school. Officials say they just wanted to make sure their students were safe.
