Republican National Convention And Oklahoma Leaders

Tuesday, September 2, 2008; Posted: 5:18 p.m. (CDT)

The mood at the Republican National Convention was much different than in previous years.

Representative Mary Fallin, R-Oklahoma, says, "I did think Senator McCain did the right thing yesterday."

Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett says, "There's an appropriate time to move forward and I didn't feel like last night was the time to move forward."

Oklahoma leaders scheduled to speak before it started included Congressman Tom Cole on Monday and that didn't take place.  Senator Tom Coburn was scheduled for Tuesday and apparently he's now off the schedule.

Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett is the only mayor slated to speak at the convention.  He's scheduled for Wednesday night.

Mayor Cornett says, "I'm thrilled to get the opportunity and hope it all goes well."

U.S. Representative Mary Fallin is scheduled for Thursday.  She says, "I'm going to talk about something that's very important to America and that's the unity of America."

This convention, Republicans are asking Americans to reach out to victims of Gustav.  You can go to www.causegreater.com.  It's one of the many efforts taking place across the nation.

Cindy McCain, wife of John McCain, says, "Together we can accomplish so much in helping those affected."

Gustav put some things on hold but Oklahoma leaders are confident their message will be heard.

Mayor Cornett says, "Although there are no longer four people who are going to speak, you see sprinkled throughout the convention and republican politics a lot of people with Oklahoma ties."

Democrats are also using the web as well as text messaging once again.  In fact, Obama sent out messages to his supporters urging them to give to the Red Cross.
