Meningitis Kills Oklahoma Teen
KSBI-TV has learned that a 13 year old girl from Lincoln County has died from Meningitis.
Oklahoma State Epidemiologist Brett Cauthen said that it is not clear if the unidentified teen had viral or bacterial meningitis at the time of her death.
The State Health Department and the CDC will now work together to perform a new series of tests. It could be weeks before the results of the tests are known.
Although meningitis is contagious, Mr. Cauthen says that friends and classmates of the teen are not at risk.
A meningitis vaccine became available last year and is recommended for college students staying in dorms, military recruits, and children ages 11-12.
