Police: Suspect Hits Officer with Car

Thursday, May 15, 2008; Posted 6.38 pm (CDT)

Oklahoma City Police say a Chevy Blazer was the suspect's weapon. A witness told KSBI-TV after the suspect hit an officer with it, he hit her car and then began to run.

"It scared the crap out of me," says Karin Holmes, who lives nearby and witnessed the events. "I'm just going to be honest with you. My chest is still hurting, I've been vomiting because I am so shook up about it."

A little after 10 am Thursday, Holmes says she woke up to the sound of gunfire.

"I heard some gunshots, maybe four, maybe five," says Holmes. "To actually know it was a gun shot, it was very scary to me because bullets don't have any eyes."

Police were called to the scene on a tip that a robbery suspect was nearby.

"They made contact with the suspect," says Oklahoma City Police Sgt. Paco Balderrama. "The suspect then got into a vehicle and attempted to hit one of the officers, at that point knocking one down into a fence with the vehicle."

Police say the other officer fired at the individual, injuring him. Holmes says the suspect then hit her yellow truck with his Chevy Blazer.

"The suspect then exited the vehicle and ran westbound over a couple fences into several backyards," says Balderrama.

Police say the individual then kicked in the door to a nearby house. Officers located and arrested him there. At the time, a family was inside, but officials say they were not harmed.

"Whether he actually know them, whether he's a friend, whether he felt comfortable hiding there, at this point we Don't know," says Balderrama.

Police say the officer hit by the vehicle was a little banged up and taken to an area hospital but is going to be fine. They say the suspect was also taken to the hospital. His injury is non-life threatening.

Both detectives have been placed on routine administrative leave with pay pending the investigation. No names have been released at this time. Police say the suspect will be charged with robbery one and assault with a deadly weapon once released from the hospital.
