James L. Dennis Elementary in northwest Oklahoma City held a creative event. It's the annual "living history" day. Students dressed up as their favorite Oklahoma celebrity and learned about their favorite famous face.
Among those at the event was Garth Brooks, also known as Tyler Johnston. The reason Tyler chose to be the country superstar is simple.
Tyler says, "Because he's one of my favorite country singers. Some of the songs he has I think are just really spiritual."
Plus, you could also find Barry Sanders, Carl Albert and Reba McEntire to name a few.
Shera Steinhoff is a teacher at the elementary school. She says, "We have astronauts, we have sports figure and musicians. People just from all walks of life."
She goes on to say, "They learn about all the wonderful Oklahomans that grew up in our state."
The fourth graders are having a great time in this event which has been going on for 10 years.
Steinhoff says, "It's very important to our students. It instills in them just another reason to be proud to be from Oklahoma."
Carol Johnston, a parent and Tyler's mom, says, "It's better than any kind of book or anything they could have done in the classroom."
Visitors at the event had a chance to press a button. Then, in character and costume, the students delivered a one minute speech about the celebrity's life and the impact they had on the history of Oklahoma.
"I think it's a fun way to learn," says Tyler.
A fun, unique way for students such as Tyler to get a lesson on more than 50 famous Oklahomans who have impacted our state and beyond.
