Weather Affects Dream Vacation

Monday, December 10, 2007; Posted: 5:23 p.m. (CDT)

While some fear they'll miss work or a wrestling match, others fear their dream vacation may remain just that.

"We wanted to go at Christmas, and so that's what we did for six months: schedule," says stranded traveler Tamie Fiel.

But their six months worth of planning for a week of vacation did not include bad weather. Tamie Fiel and Becky Harper have never visited New York City, but they decided now was the time to go. They drove from Canadian, Texas to Oklahoma City only to realize their dream had been put on hold.

"What can you do?" asks Tamie. "It's nobody's fault. It's the weather.

Southwest, United and Continental Airlines all cancelled flights in and out of Will Rogers World Airport Monday.

"So this is our vacation, our hotel room," says Tamie.

Tamie and Becky have tickets to two Broadway shows, a ballet, to the Rockettes, the Statue of Liberty, to Good Morning America and a whole lot more.

"It's money that can't be refunded, and so we're just out the money. We're paying for a New York City hotel right now even though we're in Oklahoma City," says Tamie.

But while they both may be down, they're not giving up.

"We're going to rebook and rebook until we get out, even if it's for only one night," says Tamie.

Because this is something they've been wanting to do for a long time.

"Yes, it was our dream vacation. We've been best friends for over 20 years, and it's our childhood dream," says Tamie.

And while we hope they make it to New York City, whether they do or not, at least they got to show their signs off somewhere.

The irony here is that Becky and Tamie go to Oklahoma City every year around this time for vacation. They say they've always joked about going to New York City. They finally decided to do it this year, and they're stuck in Oklahoma City.

Officials say the best way to check the status of your flight is to call the airline you're flying on. Those numbers are below.
