Purchases of Promise Rings on the Rise
Tradition is Changing
The tradition of the groom choosing his future bride's engagement ring may be dying out, claims one ring retailer, with more and more men choosing to propose with a promise ring instead.
"It used to be the case that a man would buy an engagement ring to offer to his fiancé when he proposed to her," said one jewelry retailer. "But that tradition is starting to die out as women prefer to choose their engagement ring themselves.
He continued. "Now, men are just as likely to buy a promise ring to propose with. This is a less expensive ring which is used symbolically during the proposal. The couple can then go shopping together to purchase the ‘real’ engagement ring, allowing the bride-to-be to have a say in the type of ring she wears."
Promise rings have been around for a long time, and are also used by couples who want to make a commitment to each other without necessarily getting engaged.
Once an engagement takes place, the promise ring can be transferred to the right hand, or worn alongside the engagement ring as a special symbol of that commitment.
"An engagement ring is an important purchase," the expert added. "It’s a ring that the bride will wear for the rest of her life, and the groom should traditionally spend the equivalent of one month's salary on it.
