Helmet Saves Man's Life

Thursday, September 20, 2007; Posted: 3:38 p.m. (CDT)

Jay Vaught was driving along the Broadway Extension on August 14, when a medical issue caused him to pass out.  Vaught struck a retaining wall and was thrown from his motorcycle.  He landed about 12 feet below near a service road.

An Oklahoma County Sheriff's Deputy caught the aftermath of the motorcycle accident on his dash camera.

Vaught says, "I'll never forget what the sheriff holding me said.  He said you're alive, you're alive."

Vaught suffered some broken bones.  However, he knows it could have turned out much worse if he hadn't been wearing a helmet.

He says, "I'm glad I had it on because I was told if I didn't that I probably wouldn't have survived it."

This father of two had promised his closest loved ones, he would always ride his motorcycle with protection.

"Everybody has family and people who love them," Vaught says. "Think about them before you get on your bike and strap on your helmet."

The Edmond man is truly thankful for the overwhelming love and support he has received.  He also wanted to thank two sheriff deputies.

Deputy John Rose happened to be driving behind Vaught during the accident.  Deputy Frank Valley quickly came to his rescue.

Deputy Valley says it was just fate.

It's an amazing story and it serves as a life-saving reminder.

"He had all the proper safety equipment on," says Deputy Valley.  "It's probably one thing that saved his life."

Vaught says, "I would say you're crazy if you don't put on a helmet.  You think you're cool, you're not cool!"
