School tragedies have become an all too familiar scene. It's the reason many schools are always working to increase security.
Mark Stout, Acting Chief of Police for the Putnam City Campus Police Department, says, "With everything that is going on in today's society, it's just one of those things we don't want to have to do, but it's something we have to do."
The Putnam City School District already has its own police department. It's made up of eight campus police officers. Six private security officers are being added to increase security even more.
Richard McLain, BPS Security Owner, says, "We want to be all around the schools so that outsiders can see the school has gone to the trouble to get security."
Students also gave us their reaction to the new officers.
Susana Escalera, a student, says, "I think that's great because in most of the schools there are a lot of fights."
Another student, Collin Mastbrook, says, "You can never be too safe."
Putnam City schools start class on Wednesday.
