Rain Brings Health Concerns

Wednesday, June 27, 2007; Posted: 2:28 p.m. (CDT)

We've seen the flooding around the area but the rains are bringing more than water, they've also brought a prime breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Six-year-old Kaitlyn Owens says, "They bite me."

Those pesky mosquitoes have caused problems for a mother of three.

Christina Owens says, "You go out there for a minute and you're eaten up by mosquitoes."

Of course, mosquitoes bring with them the threat of West Nile Virus.

HR Holman, with the Oklahoma City-County Health Department, says, "We haven't had any cases of West Nile as of yet but we don't want to start."

Holman also offers some advice.  He suggests using repellent, wearing long pants and long sleeve shirts.  He also suggests avoiding outside activity during early morning and early evening.

Christina says, "We usually spray the kids down."

West Nile is not the only concern, standing water can contain harmful bacteria, chemicals and other substances.

"I just think stay out of the water.  You never know where the water is coming from or what is in the water," says Christina.

One other concern to be aware of is the mold growth.

Holman says, "It can cause a lot of health problems especially for people that have allergies.  It can be a real concern."

One way to help with those allergies is to use a dehumidifier.  It can help remove moisture from the air and prevent  the growth of mold.
