Details and Reaction to New OSU Coach

Thursday, April 17, 2008; Posted 9.12 pm (CDT)

Since the news broke that University of Massachusetts coach Travis Ford would become a cowboy, fans have been researching to see who they now have.

"I don't know a whole lot about but I know he's done really good things at UMass," says OSU fan Anthony Payne.

"High power offense, I mean, that's kind of his thing," says OSU fan Ryan Hale.

The new head coach was born in Madisonville, Kentucky. He went on to play at the University of Missouri and then transferred to the University of Kentucky. He began his head-coaching career at Campbellsville University. He then went on to Eastern Kentucky and yesterday left UMass for Oklahoma State.

Though he was able to turn the tide for UMass and send them to NIT, as we saw with Sean Sutton, that's not going to cut it here.

We can do that on our own," says Hale. "We don't need another coach to do that so hopefully with the talent we have he can get it done and get us back to NCAA tournament. I have high hopes. He did turn that program around so maybe he is a coaching genius. We'll see."

"I hope he brings a little more discipline to the team, he's able to get the team in line and better recruiting," says OSU fan Chase John.

"I'm hoping he'll bring some wins," says Payne. "We really need to get better on the road, some confidence on the road, so I'm hoping that he'll focus on that a lot more."

With past talks for names like Bill Self and John Calipari, some fans are shocked and a little disappointed.

"I didn't think we ever had a chance with Bill Self," says Payne.

"I thought we were going to get someone a little more elite," says John.

But they have high hopes for a strong leading future.

"I think it's a good hire because we're looking for long-term, and the UMass coach had a good season with the UMass team and I think it'll be a good long-term choice for us," says John.

"He's an up-and-coming coach and kind of a young gun so probably not the best choice, not the person we wanted but, given the cicumstances, it'll probably be all right," says Hale.

While there are mixed reactions now, everyone will just have to see how it turns out once Ford settles in to OSU and the Cowboys.
